Through Farmer-led Research
Organics is the fastest growing agri-food sector in Canada today. Despite this, most organic farmers in Canada must grow seeds that have been bred for non-organic, fossil-fuel intensive farming systems.
We believe that good organic food should come from good organic seed. Organic and agro-ecological farmers have distinct seed needs, including plants with good root systems, resistance to pests and diseases, and tolerance to mechanical weeding. They should also have excellent nutrition and taste great! To ensure farmers have seeds that perform well today and for generations to come, we are supporting them to breed new varieties that will thrive on their farms, and adapt to a changing climate.
For varieties to reflect farmers’ priorities, farmers need to be in the driver’s seat. We are the only organization working across Canada to support farmers to improve and breed varieties tailored to organic, ecological, and low-input farming systems, and adapted to their local regions.
The Bauta Family Initiative on Canadian Seed Security works with over 100 Canadian farmers to trial, improve, and create new varieties of vegetables and field crops.
